Leading the Way: D-Orbit's Groundbreaking In-Orbit Infrastructure-as-a-Service to Enhance its ION Mission with Addvalue’s IDRS™

A new collaboration between space logistics and orbital transportation services company D‑Orbit and communication specialists Addvalue will see its Inter-satellite Data Relay System (IDRS™) deployed for D-Orbit’s ION in-orbit demonstration mission, due to launch in mid‑2025.
The mission, part of the D-Orbit Intelligent Networked Node (INN) payload family, will deliver groundbreaking infrastructure-as-a-service capabilities to D-Orbit’s Software In-Orbit Demonstration (SW IOD) customers in 2025 and beyond. The INN-based infrastructure includes high-performance computation, sensors, telemetry and advanced communication equipment.
Addvalue’s IDRS™ will be used to deliver tasking, software deployment and the download of edge processed data products directly to end users; all on-demand and in near real-time. The mission will launch on our ION spacecraft in 2025 with an expected mission duration of 18 months.
The game-changing IDRS™ makes all this possible using the world’s only commercially available ‘always-on’, on-demand, near real-time connection for any LEO satellite which has four years of immaculate flight heritage. This enables access to 24/7 data connection and transfer services with LEO and VLEO satellites across all orbital inclinations and removes the need for restrictive earth station scheduling for managing or tasking any LEO spacecraft.
Viasat’s highly reliable global L-band geostationary satellites and advanced ground infrastructure provide connectivity for IDRS™, delivering a persistent, reliable, and secure end-to-end IP connectivity in near real-time.
The mission will use D-Orbit's ION Satellite Carrier: a space vehicle that has demonstrated its versatility through 14 successful missions that performed multiple satellite deployment, hosted payload operations, and in-orbit demonstrations.
D-Orbit’s Head of Business Development – Advanced Services, Viney Jean-Francois Dhiri, commented, “It’s in the name, we envisaged an enhanced experience for our customers creating value by removing barriers in connectivity, Addvalue IDRS will help us deliver that experience”. Thomas Dell, D-Orbit’s Head of Technology - Space Cloud Services, added, “We are very excited to integrate Addvalue IDRS into our D-Orbit Intelligent Networked Node (INN) mission, enabling real-time tasking, seamless software deployment, and direct delivery of edge-processed data to end users, pioneering the future of in-orbit infrastructure-as-a-service for our SW IOD customers in 2025 and beyond”.
Tan Khai Pang, Chief Executive Officer of Addvalue, commented, “At Addvalue, we are thrilled to partner with D-Orbit to bring about the revolutionary D-Orbit’s cloud-based technology that provides speedy transfer of actionable information from space without the need of ground processing. This collaboration marks a significant milestone not only in enhancing the operational efficiency of LEO satellites, but also in advancing LEO-based applications that demand fast situational responses. We are excited to see the transformative impact made by the IDRS™ technology will have on the space industry and our customers.”
Todd McDonell, President, Viasat International Government, said: “Viasat is delighted to deliver the communications link enabling on-demand connectivity for the demonstration. We are seeing demand for space-to-space capabilities like IDRS™ rise as governments and agencies push the boundaries for multi-orbit, multi-band solutions. But they need to be assured those solutions are underpinned by reliable, secure, and resilient networks. That is where we come in.”
